In
August, the Northern Tibetan Grassland is enveloped with a strong festive
atmosphere. The Nagchu
Horse Racing Festival falls in August each year,
the golden time of the Changtang Grassland.
The
Changtang Grassland in northern Tibet covers an area of some 600 thousand square
km. It is one of the five biggest pastures in China. Changtang means northern
grassland in Tibetan language. The grassland,
surrounded by the Kunlun, Tanggula, Kangdese and
Nyainqentanglha mountains, and nourished by Black River, is the paradise for
the wild animals and plants. The famous Qinghai-Tibet
Railway crossed this beautiful grassland.
The
grassland is also rich in culture. Tibetan nomads here have created their own colorful,
fascinating and long-standing nomadic culture characterized by ancient rock
paintings, the Ruins of Yamtung (or Zhangzhung) Kingdom, long epic about King
Gesar, Nyima Mound, prayer flags and ancient towers, etc, adding mysterious
color to Changtang Grassland and making it irresistibly attractive.
The
Nagchu Horse Racing Festival is a big event to exhibit its culture. It is the grandest
festival in northern Tibet. Tens of thousands of herdmen gather at the grassland
outside of Nachu city. The vast grassland is dotted with tents and Tibetan
people in their traditional clothes. On the festival, most of the girls and
middle-aged women wear gorgeous and expensive Tibetan gowns and hang a lot of
tinkling trinkets with them, forming a beautiful scene. After a grand opening
ceremony, various activities will start, such as horserace, yak race, tug of
war, lifting stones and Tibetan opera performance.
The
cheapest way to the grassland is take a Tibet train.
Travelers can take a train
from Beijing to Lhasa or from other cities of
mainland China, and take off the train at Damxung Railway Station and then rent
a car to the grassland. If travelers fly to Lhasa, they can also take a train
to Damxung from Lhasa. Of course, travelers can rent a car to the grassland
from Lhasa, but it will cost much more money.
