The breathtaking view of Drigong monastery
near Tridom hot-spring. The monastery situates on a hill and is very popular
for its sky burial site in whole Tibet. The monastery attracts lots of tourists
and locals for their strong religious environment and beautiful scenery.
As a notable monastery in Lhasa, the Drigong
Monastery stands at an elevation of 4,150m above sea level, about 150kms
northeast of Lhasa city. It is named after its location and known as the head
monastery of the Drigung Kagyu sect of Tibetan Buddhism. Currently, it houses
250 to 300 monks.
As we know, sky burial is always a
mysterious custom in Tibet for travelers. The sky burial site naturally becomes
an attraction for tourists. Though sky burials take
place throughout all of the Tibetan Plateau, the sky burial site at Drigong
Monastery is the biggest and also the most famous one.
Sky burial is commonly performed by monks.
It has become one of the more notable aspects of the Tibetan religious culture
and many travelers to travel to Tibet.
In sky burial, the bodies of the dead are put out for nature to decompose or
for predatory birds to eat. As Buddhists believe in reincarnation, there is no
need, in their view, to preserve the corpses.
Not far from the Drigong is a nunnery
called Tidrum. The nunnery has a good location in the narrow gorge at the
confluence of two steams. A pilgrimage route leads from the monastery to the
nunnery. It takes around a day to do the 16km walk, but you will be rewarded
with a wonderful hot spring bath on your arrival. For a ridiculous price of
about 0.6$ you can bath in the hot spring as you like. It is said that the medicinal
hot springs can cure a variety of diseases.
